Description

Fo dog tenpai or tea ghost:

Glazed ceramic sculpture depicting a Chinese gate lion. A dual-purpose design work and a small sculpture of contemporary art. One function is tenpai and the other is the tea ghost or also known as tea pet. In its history, the name of the dog is presumably the result of an erroneous early translation. These lions fought the dragons in a cultural sense as a symbol of freedom and gradually became not only indispensable elements of gardens and gates, but also appeared in antique bonsai and penjing bowls sometimes and, of course, through carved stone seals in the art of the written and pictorial world. Nowadays, it is an almost indispensable part of the Chinese interior – it is almost certain to be present somewhere in some form in an apartment or office, restaurant, hotel, etc …

Dimensions of the sculpture: It has a classic tenpai size, measuring 5.5 cm on its longer axis and 3 cm on both its height and shorter axis.

In the old world, Chinese lion statues were primarily diplomatic or business gifts in many cases – just as their appearance in China was attributed to such gifts.
